• In 1836, a Norwegian farmer discovered over 1,850 coins under a stone on the southwest coast of Norway, known as the Årstad hoard.
  • The hoard consists mainly of Anglo-Saxon and German coins, with some Danish and Norwegian examples, likely deposited in the 11th century.
  • For nearly two centuries, the Årstad hoard was considered the largest Viking Age coin hoard ever excavated in Norway.
  • In April of this year, that record was surpassed by a new discovery, dethroning the Årstad hoard.
