• Sac Balam was a special Maya settlement founded in 1586 by the Lakandon Ch’ol after their previous capital was destroyed by Spanish troops.
  • The name Sac Balam means “White Jaguar” in the Ch’ol language and it became a symbol of resistance against the conquistadors for over a century.
