The EU has reached a provisional deal on watered-down AI rules as part of the European Commission’s digital omnibus package.
Implementation of rules for high-risk AI systems, including biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, law enforcement, and border management, is postponed to December 2, 2027.
Exclusion of machinery from the AI Act was agreed, with the view that it only needs to comply with existing sectoral safety rules.
Mandatory watermarking of AI-generated content will apply from December 2.
A ban on AI applications used to create unauthorized sexually explicit deepfakes, including child sexual abuse material, was agreed.
The ban responds to incidents like the use of Grok chatbot to generate millions of sexually explicit AI images.
